Graduating from UTAS in 1992 Bernadette spent the next 10 years working as a psychologist for Community Mental Health (Child & Adolescent/ Adult).  Bernadette has also worked for UTAS, cradle coast campus as honorary clinical lecturer and tutor with the School of Psychology.

 

Bernadette moved into private practice in 2003 and has a special interest in treatment of chronic pain and trauma.  In 2016 Bernadette completed her Masters of Science in Medicine (Pain Management) through University of Sydney. Aside from consulting in private practice Bernadette co-facilitates the federally funded Overcoming Pain and Living Well Program (OPAL) group program run on the north west coast and is co-director of Pain Solutions, a  multidisciplinary team working with patients suffering with chronic non-cancer pain.

 

Patricia Aitken

REGISTERED PSYCHOLOGIST

Patricia is a Registered Psychologist who graduated from Deakin University and University of Tasmania in 2012.  Previous to joining PsychologyPlus Patricia worked with the North West Disability Assessment and Advisory Team.

 

Therapies used include Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Schema Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Mindfulness.  Patricia is also an experienced Clinical Hypnotherapist.

 

Special areas of interest are Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and fear-based states of trauma, depression, anxiety, anger, stress and phobias.  Also sleep disorders, low self-esteem, smoking cessation, grief, weight management and body image issues.

 

Patricia works with adults, teens and children, and treats issues with children including anxiety, sleep disturbance, behavioural problems, learning difficulties and enuresis.

Nicole Mainwaring Assoc. MAPS

Nicole became a Registered Psychologist after graduating from Charles Sturt University with First Class Honours in 2003. Since graduating, Nicole has received additional qualifications in Developmental Psychiatry, she is also currently completing her Masters degree. Nicole has many years' experience working with Children, adolescents and adults. She has worked with the Australian Childhood Foundation, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Family violence and Disability services.

 

Nicole utilises therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), positive behaviour support, mindfulness and solution focused therapy. Nicole has a particular interest these mindfulness approaches and has attended overseas training sessions in order to help people she is working with develop these principles in their own lives.

 

Other areas of interest include: Child and Adolescent Psychology; relaxation and stress management; managing life transitions; grief and loss; emotion regulation (anger management); trauma; anxiety and depression

 

Sinéad Fahey Assoc. MAPS

Sinéad is a registered psychologist who graduated from the University of Portsmouth, UK in 1999. Since relocating to Tasmania, Sinéad has worked with young people and adults for Family Violence Counselling and Support Service and HealthWest.

 

Sinéad utilises therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness. Areas of interest include Trauma, Anxiety, Grief and Loss, Chronic Disease and pain management.

 

Heather Rutherford MAPS

REGISTERED PSYCHOLOGIST

 

Treatments: Intellectual, Developmental and learning Assessments for children adolescents and adults.

 

Heather is a Registered Psychologist who graduated from University of Tasmania in 1997.  She has two decades of experience as a School Psychologist where she has gained expertise in assessing and diagnosing various learning and behavioral conditions that present in childhood including: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability and Specific Learning Disorders such as Dyslexia.  Her assessment reports are helpful to parents and teachers as she provides specific and detailed recommendations for interventions in the home and school settings.

 

Heathers experience allows her to guide children and young people through the assessment process so this is an engaging and often enjoyable experience and she shares her feedback and findings with parrent sin a direct yet sensitive manner. Heather has worked with children who are not yet of school age through to young adults.

 

Gaylie Harman

Gaylie has worked with Psychology Plus since on a part time basis since 2013. Most recently, she has taken up the position as Practice Manager with Psychology Plus. Gaylie also manages the OPAL chronic pain program and Pain Solutions private chronic pain program.

Psychological Services

Specialist psychological treatment for a range of mental health conditions and life issues including trauma, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, sleep, work related stress, chronic pain as well as assessments for developmental, intellectual and learning disorders. Our Psychologists offer services to children, adolescents and adults.

Specialist Chronic Pain Services

OPAL - Coastal Physiotherapy in conjunction with Psychology Plus run free Chronic Pain Group Self Management Programs in Burnie and Devonport (TAZREACH funded ).Pain Solutions Tasmania in conjunction with our staff offer specialist Chronic Pain services for clients referred by third parties (MAIB,Workers Compensation, Veterans Affairs). Please speak to our administration staff for more information about these programs.

Referrals

Self Referral: Clients can be self referred and may be able to obtain a rebate from their private health fund.

 

GP Referral: A GP referral with a mental health care plan allows a Medicare rebate to be paid at the time of the consultation. This rebate reduces the out of pocket expense for consultations. The practice does not bulk bill .

 

Third Party: Our Psychologists see clients referred by third parties including MAIB, Workers Compensation, Veterans Affairs and Comcare.

Appointments

Appointments are 50 minutes. Prior to your initial appointment you will be sent a client registration form and you will be given information about fees, your rights, and an explanation about confidentiality. You are welcome to bring a support person along.

 

Appointments for Children: It is our practice to see a parent, guardian or carer prior to the appointment with a child. This allows the psychologist to gather as much background history as possible, along with relevant  reports or assessment relating to the child.

Cancellations

We ask that you give us 24 hours notice of cancellation and rescheduling of appointments. This helps us make appointments available for other clients. A cancellation fee may be applied if less than 24 hours notice is given.
